WHAT IS CORRUPTION? Corruption is the abuse of entrusted power for private gain. It has been estimated that corruption costs societies more than $1 trillion annually. Corruption affects society in many adverse ways:
- Taxpayers pay more due to public procurement corruption. It has been estimated that between 20% and 25% of global public procurement spending is lost to corruption.
- Trust in government and the rule of law is diminished when public officials take bribes.
- Citizens in developing countries do not benefit from international development assistance when it is stolen or misused by corrupt public officials.
- Free and fair economic competition is harmed when companies pay bribes to win contracts.
